The site MATSU-e combines Eastern art (sumi-e) and bonsai. Both sumi-e and bonsai are originated in China and later adopted by Japan.

The Chinese version of bonsai (Penjing) uses as basis the natural shape of trees, where the Japanese the bonsai more created as a caricature of a typical tree.
In Japan also, they have created the different styles of what we recognize as the classic bonsai. Bonsai = tree in pot

The Chinese version of sumi-e is using colors, where the Japanese are using black ink, with can be diluted to several grey tones.
